That is what the PADI Advanced Open Water Diver course is all about. You don’t have to be “advanced” to take it – it’s designed to advance your diving, so you can start right after earning your PADI Open Water Diver certification. The course helps build confidence and expand your scuba skills through different Adventure Dives. You try out different specialties while gaining experience under the supervision of your PADI Instructor. You log dives and develop capabilities as you find new ways to have fun scuba diving.
Who should take this course?
PADI (Junior) Open Water Divers who are at least 12 years old are ready to step up and enroll in an Advanced Open Water Diver course. Young divers may only participate in certain Adventures Dives.
Academics
Sign up for Advanced Open Water Elearning – PADI’s eLearning option – to get started immediately. Make sure to link your purchase to the Iguana Divers store so that you can be in our student database and we can keep track of your progress prior to arrival. You just need to read and complete the sections for the Adventure Dives you are accomplishing or as directed by your PADI Instructor.
Advanced open water training
You will plan your learning path with your instructor by choosing from a long list of Adventure Dives that are possible in our location and with our foreseeable ocean conditions. There are two required dives, Deep and Underwater Navigation. The other knowledge and skills you get vary with your interest and the adventures you have. You need to complete an additional three dives and some of the adventure dives we can offer are:
1. Peak Performance Buoyancy, where we will practice all sorts of breathing and finning techniques to help you be more efficient on air consumption and movement during your dives.
2. Drift Diving, where you will learn how to read currents and make the best of them to enjoy your dives with ease.
3. Fish identification, learn more about the Costa Rican ecosystem. We will teach you how to identify, locate and signal different species of fish.
4. Digital underwater photography, practice diving with a camera and learn how to take great photos/videos whilst controlling your buoyancy.
5. Shark conservation, dive with white tip reef sharks, learn about the decline of sharks globally and how to conserve them. If you would like to you can combine your advanced course with a Shark Conservation Specialty Course and earn 2 certifications!

Breakdown of price
The price for the course is $700 ($216 to PADI for the elearning, and $484 to Iguana Divers for instruction and dives) and it includes all of the above (personal online learning materials - that is useful to continue other dive specialties, instruction, use of diving gear, three days diving plus of course your international certification).
You may be able to get college credit for the Advanced Open Water Diver course.
